A walk on the wild side. Hiking is always a healthful activity, but
around Red River, it is also spectacular. There are 138 miles of well-marked
trails within our beautiful valley, offering walks of any length, skill or
endurance level. Take a leisurely half-day adventure on the Red River Nature
Trail in and around town, or strike out for the vast Wheeler Peak Wilderness
Area or an array of shorter trails throughout Columbine Canyon. (Note: At 13,161
feet, Wheeler Peak is the state's highest point.) Nature is unusually rewarding
for those who walk, watch and listen.

If you'd rather bike than hike. We encourage responsible biking of all
kinds in the Red River Valley. There are numerous trails--many are old logging
roads interconnecting to single track trails--just for bikers. You can even
hitchhike your bike on our ski chairlift and ride down the trails you whooshed
last winter. Don't forget to check out our schedule of bike races and related
events throughout the year.

Red River is an ideal place to go four-wheel
exploring. Escorted tours are available, or if you prefer, go it alone along a
series of well-marked area trails. There are old mining camps to explore and
plenty of breathtaking high country as well. (All we ask is that you explore
responsibly; stay on trails, keep noise to a minimum and leave as little trace
of your passage as possible.)
**Your Action is Needed**
Help us keep the Red River Trails Open...
Currently the Carson National Forest is considering closing many of the
trails marked for OHV (off-highway vehicle) traffic around Red River.
It is crucial that everyone recognize and respect the current marked
trails while exploring the beauty of the Carson National Forest.
Repeated traffic off of marked trails will result in all of us losing
the ability to enjoy the scenery of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors have drafted a letter to send
to the Forest Service. If you support the efforts of the Red River
Chamber and the Town of Red River's efforts to keep these trails open,
please download
this letter, personalize and/or modify it and send it
in to the Questa Ranger District attention Mrs. Mary Ann Elder, Carson
National Forest-Questa Ranger District, P. O. Box 110, Questa, NM
87556 and also send it to Mr. John Miera, Carson National Forest, 208
Cruz Alta Road, Taos, NM 87571

Bag your limit. The Rio Colorado, or "Red River," is stocked with more
trout than any other public river in the nation. (You may wish to make a side
trip to the fascinating fish hatchery 15 miles away.) Varieties include
cutthroat and rainbow trout. Don't forget that you'll need a special license to
fish here. Half-day, full-day, and special five-day licenses are available.

Parks and Recreation. Red River is truly an outdoors kind of place.
There are numerous parks throughout our picturesque alpine village, offering
everything from rolling, wide-open spaces and stirring mountain vistas to
old-fashioned swings and picnic facilities. Mallette Park even offers tennis
courts and sand volleyball. The Old West comes alive during afternoon
"shootouts" at Fryes Old Town. And you may decide to take in some white-water
rafting on the nearby Rio Grande before getting the family ready for an evening
of activities in and around town. There's just one word for a Red River family
vacation...memorable.
